The Resort & Casino

A rose-red casino,
on an ancient port hill.

Thebriarwoodhotel is a boutique resort and casino set behind a rose-brick townhouse front on Mermaid Street, in the oldest quarter of Rye. Inside, a compact but properly-appointed casino floor opens off the hall — fifty tables and gaming positions, a corner poker room and rows of slot machines — with leaded windows looking out over a tangle of cobbled lanes that have barely changed since the Cinque Ports held this stretch of coast.

This is the offline casino, scaled to a hill-town. Blackjack, roulette and baccarat are dealt across a warm, low-ceilinged pit; craps and sic bo add a bit of noise on a Friday; and the private Land Gate Salons — named for Rye's surviving medieval gate — keep higher stakes behind a heavy oak door. Every table is run by trained staff, stakes posted plainly, and a first visit made easy by hosts who know the room.

Around the gaming, the hotel keeps its own quiet rhythm: six restaurants and bars, a walled rose garden for an evening drink, a spa tucked into the old cellars and a candlelit stage for the odd late set. A night at Thebriarwoodhotel can be all casino or barely any — the cobbles outside, and the choice, are entirely yours.

Thebriarwoodhotel Experience

An offline casino, on an ancient port hill.

There's a difference between a casino on a screen and one you reach by climbing a cobbled hill. At Thebriarwoodhotel, the casino floor is a room you can feel — the clatter of chips, the turn of a wheel, low voices under old beams. This is a land-based casino built for a town that has always looked out to sea, even now the sea itself has receded.

The gaming here is classic and unhurried. Take a seat at blackjack and play through a shoe, watch a run at baccarat, or step up to a high-limit table in the Land Gate Salons. In the corner poker room, cash games and weeknight heats keep a steady table; along the window, rows of slot machines and electronic terminals catch the last of the daylight. Every game is posted with clear stakes, and hosts are always glad to talk a newcomer through the rules.

Thebriarwoodhotel is a proper resort in miniature — you needn't step outside all weekend. Play through the afternoon, dine on Rye Bay fish, take a gin in the walled garden at dusk and sleep behind thick old walls with the gulls for company. A short train from London and a stone's throw from Camber Sands, it turns an evening at the tables into a proper coastal break.

And because a good casino looks after its guests, care is built into every table. Set your own limits, take a break, or have a quiet word with a host whenever you like. Thebriarwoodhotel is strictly 18+, with photo ID checked at the door — a warm, grown-up room where the game stays exactly that: a pleasure.
